FSW head for CNC machines 3, 4 or 5 axes
Our FSW head can weld from existing CNC machine tools, whether it is a 3, 4 or 5-axis machine. The Stirweld FSW head brings FSW welding functions to the machining center: force control and recording, cooling, protection of the spindle against loads and vibrations.
Compared to a special FSW machine, Stirweld’s solution drastically reduces the investment cost while offering identical performances.

CARACTERISTICS OF STIRWELD FSW PROCESS ON CNC MACHINE

The Stirweld FSW head is cooled by compressed air and by water.
Compressed air is supplied to the FSW head and it comes out at the level of the shaft and the tool.
The chiller sends cold water into the Stirweld head. The hot water comes out and returns to the chiller and the cool water circulates in a watertight way in the head, cooling it.
To secure the weld quality, tool penetration into the workpiece must be constant.
Welding without force control can lead to excessive flash, porosity or wormholes, which are controlled by the ISO 25239 standard.
With the control panel, you can record the force at which you are welding for future friction stir welding operations. It helps you proof process repeatability and quality of the welds.
In the design of the FSW head for CNC machines, Stirweld engineers have added a claw coopling to protect the machine from vibration. The claw coopling isolates the vibrations, in torque or in translation, and thus cancels out any vibrations emitted during the welding operation.

With the acquisition of the FSW head from Stirweld, Talendi (formerly Bretagne Ateliers) offers its customers a new high-performance welding solution that is technological, ecological and economical.
In 2021, Bretagne Ateliers has optimised its machine park by purchasing the FSW head from Stirweld. Installed on its machining centre, it enables it to offer quality, watertight, aesthetic and high mechanical resistance welds.
At the end of the year, a few weeks after its installation, the FSW head was activated for a first customer who had a quick need to make welds on some of its parts. FSW technology is the ideal solution for welds with very high quality requirements and Bretagne Ateliers is able to meet the deadline.
Barely a month later, thanks to the involvement and rigour of the teams and the collaboration between the customer and Bretagne Ateliers, the first newly welded parts were sent out.
ADVANCED FUNCTION: STIRWELD MILLING ADD-ON
With the milling add-on you can switch from welding to machining and back again in an instant. Indeed, it is a system of taking and depositing a machining tool allowing you to have a hybrid system of FSW welding and machining. The main advantage: time saving because 2 operations are done on the same machine without human intervention.
MODULARITY
Switch from welding to machining in an instant and vice-versa
MILLING SPEED
Up to 10m/min
Compatible with lubrification: IP64
UNIVERSAL
Adaptable to any CNC machine
NO MAINTENANCE
FOOTPRINT ON CNC TABLE
200-mm long, 200-mm wide, 200-mm high
